Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
