Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
