Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then located numerous other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official commented the attack made him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
