A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
